La couverture végétale

Cette technique venue des temps les plus anciens, permet de couvrir le sol avec des plantes à différentes fins. De nos jours, le but premier est tout simplement de “piéger les nitrates” à l'arrivée des pluies automnales. De manière plus générale, les couverts végétaux sont la clé de voûte du semis direct. Selon Carlos Crovetto (agriculteur et agronome chilien), “les couverts végétaux sont la fertilité du sol”.

Dans les régions d'élevage, nous chercherons à couvrir le sol pour la production de fourrage après la récolte d'une culture principale lorsque la production de foin des prairies fait défaut.

La couverture végétale permet de lutter contre l'érosion éolienne et hydrique, mais aussi, de limiter l'engorgement des sols en hiver. Chaque tonne de matière sèche produite absorbe entre 20 et 30 mm d'eau pour son élaboration mais pas seulement. La diversité des espèces en couverture permet d'attirer des insectes pollinisateurs (abeilles notamment) mais aussi des auxiliaires comme les coccinelles, les syrphes, les chrysopes vertes ou encore les perce-oreilles qui sont les redoutables prédateurs des pucerons, tétranyques, thrips et cochenilles.

Autrefois, ces intercultures étaient pratiquées pour faire des engrais verts, notion souvent citée dans des encyclopédies agricoles du milieu du XVIII^e siècle.

D'après l'ouvrage “Cours raisonné et pratique d'agriculture et chimie agricole” de Michel Joseph François Scheidweiler, publié en 1841, il est mentionné à la p. 127 : “ 1) Les engrais verts sont le moyen le plus simple et le plus facile d'améliorer les terres en jachère ou en friche, lorsque l'on veut abandonner le système de culture avec jachère pour embrasser celui de culture alterne perfectionné”.

P. 128 : “ 2) Les récoltes de grains sont en général de meilleure qualité, et comme elles parviennent à une plus grande perfection avec cet engrais, elles se distinguent principalement par la qualité des semences qu'elles fournissent.” Mais aussi “ 3) Les frais qu'exigent les engrais verts sont moins considérables que ceux de tout autre engrais.”

Déjà, à cette époque, les agronomes avaient une connaissance très élaborée sur les facultés de cette couverture végétale. Nous aborderons plus en détail la nécessité des couverts végétaux dans les thèmes “CIPAN” et “Biomax”.
